Skirt Week...

Well... If you didn't know it... it's Skirt week (actually month) over at Crafter Hours...

I finally got the chance to work on a skirt for it...

To make this skirt, I broke out my BurdaStyle Handbook again...

I Thought I'd try Miho's variation...  So... this met tracing out the pattern pieces again...
And altering... to make new pattern pieces...
I sewed the skirt panels together lickety split...Then I hit a stumbling block...  the waist band piece was not going together as pictured in the book...  I read and re-read the instructions...  The only thing that made sense, was the width of the pattern piece was not correct...  For anyone else who wants to try this skirt... Here is how I constructed the waistband...
In this picture, you can see the pattern piece for my first attempt... I had to add an 1 1/2inches to the width...  when I re-cut it out...
Cut your elastic to a length that feels comfortable and add 1/2... Sew ends together with a 1/2 inch seam allowance(elastic and waistband piece)... then divide into 8 equal parts...
With wrong sides together... place elastic along the raw edge of  the waistband... match up the pins... and zig zag in place with a 1/4inch seam... also zig zag the fabric and the elastic together along the other edge...
Fold down the waist band...
Leaving a 1/2inch of the waistbands other raw edge sticking out...
The instructions say to hand baste the elastic to the waist band all the way around at this point.   I had a hard time doing this... and allowing the waistband to stretch... So I just divided the waistband into 8 equal section again, hand tacked in place at each spot...
Then you divide the skirt sections and match them up to the raw edge of the waistband...  Stitch in place with a 1/2seam using a stretch stitch (the book didn't say to use a stretch stitch, but I did since your using a knit for the waistband piece)... I also used a basting stitch at the top of the skirt to ease the fullness in between the pins...
So... Here it is... Though it did give me some moments of frustration... It turned out pretty cute... and fits perfect!  I'd say that was a success...   There's still a few days left of Skirt Week, if you have the time... there's lots of great skirts in the Flickr Pool (see if you can find me)... and Crafter Hours has been posting a bunch of tutorials all month if you need idea's...  Now go sew something!Oh... I almost forgot!  I also wanted to show you that I cut out the underskirt with the stripes going the other direction for some added visual interest ***Jennifer
