Get Ready...Get Set... Sew! Day7 Applique

Well... Day5&6 of Kids Clothes Week Challenge came and went in a flash...(much to do... with to little time... I seriously need more hours in my day!)  So, here I am at Day7... with nothing done, but a pair of shorts... and a shirt that's sewn together wrong!  Feeling a little defeated... I picked myself up from my morning cup of coffee...(poured another)... and decided to hunker down and get sewing...

First I needed to fix the top for my daughter...

Once I had the back yokes sewn on right... It was super simple to put together...

Now I can focus on the project I've been wanting to do all week for my son... This sweatshirt looks simple, but I've got ideas for some fun embellishments...

I'll show you how I applique...
First I start with some images I printed on regular paper... In the exact size that I want them on the sweatshirt...

Then I apply some fusible interfacing to the wrong side of my fabric choice...
Pin your image to the fabric... and cut out...
Are you curious what the word is yet?
Pin your applique to the fabric... you will want to do this on the front/back pieces before the garment is constructed together... so they can lay nice and flat...( If you are applying to a pre-made garment I recommend sliding a piece of cardboard in between the front and back, while pining, so the extra fabric isn't in the way)

Stitch on... There really is no wrong way to do this... I am using a straight stitch, because I like the raw edges... but you could do a decorative stitch, or a fine zig zag stitch... and cover up the edge too...
And here it is finished... I asked my son if he could have a word on his back what would it be... This is what he came up with... ROCKER...
The font is viner hand ITC (bold)
Love the way the tie turned out on the front... I stitched multiple lines to add more detail...
For spring/summer I went with the short sleeve version...
And the hood definitely rocks!

As i said before... my week hasn't quite gone as i hoped... and while I may not have gotten to all the projects I wanted to do... I am pretty happy with what i got done this week!  Also I've got two happy kids(most important).  And if I'm being honest with myself... I probably completed more this week for KCWC than I would have been motivated to do on my own... (which is the point right!)  I hope you've enjoyed this week...  See you next time around...

  1. I love the tie applique! It looks awesome! My Day 7 of the challenge was frustrating too. I had to unpick a zip twice and ended up hand sewing it in...the joy of a zip and stretch fabric!

    1. Thanks so much! It was fun to do... unlike ripping out seams ;) I suppose even us Super Women can have an off day...

  2. That is a really cute applique! I accomplished a lot this week but I have plenty more I want to do - so I should probably get off the computer and get to work, huh?

    1. I got the idea from his a favorite t-shirt that has a silk screened tie... I'm glad at least someone was more productive that me this week! Happy sewing, and good luck with your other projects... I think I'm going to sew for me next...
